Shelly Baldy Peak

National Recreation Trail (NRT) is a designation given to existing trails that contribute to health, conservation, and recreation goals in the United States.  The Skyline National Recreation Trail was placed on the NRT in 1979.   Shelly Baldy Peak is reached by following a combination of these beautiful pathways. Following  Hwy-153 toward  Eagle Point Ski Resort 16 miles up a twisting beautiful canyon road, follow the sign and access to Big Johns Flat (4 miles after leaving asphalt). A popular camping site, this high country meadow offers restroom facilities and abundant ATV trails.  One of the NRT trailheads is located on the north end of the Flat on the east side of the road and is signed (restroom facilities are also located at this parking area).   Proceed west and follow the trail marked 225, some route finding is needed on overgrown meadows and hillsides.  The trail makes a sharp switchback turn to the north and crosses the creek much higher on the hillside.  Emerging from towering pine trees walk along grassy meadows full of spring flowers, hike up rocky ridges, and cross gurgling streams. The path is well laid out and maintained. Trees that have fallen across the trail are cut to provide an easy class 1 stroll.
