Whiting Road and Cactus Hill Trail Loop

The park may close during the winter due to rain. The casual hiker has plenty of opportunities to experience the many moods of the chaparral. It's important to keep an eye out for mountain bikers. The location where a biker was killed by a lion in January 2004 is marked by the Cactus Trail segment. You will find signs along the trails during the winter. Cyclists who zip down this trail at speeds well exceeding the 5 mph are a more common hazard. It is extremely slippery in many places because of the deep grooves cut in the center of the path. You will be glad to reach the hiker's only area, which leads to the right. The path is cluttered by the leaves of live oaks.
