About This Trail

South Sister is the third tallest mountain in Oregon and the tallest of the three sister mountains. South Sister is a long and straight forward climb in the winter and summer. The summit has some of the best views of Middle Sister, North Sister, Three Fingered Jack, and even Mount Hood, which can be reached on a clear day. The traditional route begins at Devil's lake campground crossing over highway 46 before heading to the South Sister base. It takes a long switch back and a ridge climb to a false summit before you reach the true peak. The climb is a great place to ski in the winter, but routes are not clearly marked. The climb is considered non-technical and there are steep sections in low snow periods.
