White Pine Hollow Trail

Please note: this trail is reportedly closed due to high water levels damaging the road. Please research prior to your visit. The trail begins on the east side of Privateer Mine Road #160 just north of the Monument Trailhead. It is even at first, but soon drops steeply through the trees into White Pine Hollow. The trail then levels out somewhat but stays down in the canyon. The canyon is fairly narrow and steep but quite scenic with thick stands of conifers and aspen. Eventually the trail parallels a stream and some parts of the trail are somewhat boggy. Around Sullivan Canyon the trail opens up and the stream flow is much more significant, especially in early summer. There are some signs of logging in this area from years ago. Later, Calkens Hollow Trail #115 connects with this trail. The last mile of the White Pine Hollow is fairly rugged. The trail crosses the stream numerous times as the canyon is too steep, narrow and rocky to put the trail anywhere else. Look closely at the narrow rock walls that are in layers perpendicular to the canyon. There is a waterfall that can be seen on the west side of the canyon. The last stretch of the trail follows an abandoned road which was constructed to improve the spring to Tinney Flat Campground. Good drinking water and a shady rest spot can be found at the campground.
