Murphy River Walk

Murphy River Walk & Canoe Trails is the crown jewel of the City of Murphy. The beautiful 4-mile greenway encircles the historic town center of Murphy, North Carolina. Meticulously maintained, the trail is also home of the famed Leech Place of Cherokee Legend. Confluence Loop takes you to where the Valley River and Hiwassee River meet and empty in to Hiwassee Reservoir. Being at the tail end of the artificial lake, during the summers the high waters cover up much of the low lying flats along the Hiwassee Rivers and becomes a popular spot to Canoe at. There are multiple trailheads to choose from, Including ample parking at Konehete Park. Another Parking Lot can be found on McClelland Street near the middle point of the trail. The trailhead marked on this map is at the south end of the trail on Hiwassee Street at the old L&N Depot, The old unused railroad tracks themselves offer an alternative walking trail up to the old rail bridge and the overpass at Tennessee Street is a popular local graffiti spot. There is ample interpretive signage on the trail offering information about history and local plants and animals. There are even QR codes which can be read by a smartphone allowing for an education audio tour. Dogs should be kept on leashes, and there are stations where you can got baggies to clean up after your doggies. The trail north of the river in Konehete Park is paved and wheelchair accessible.
