Hazelwood Greenway-Elizabeth to Kinglake

The beginnings of an urban trail system. (under 1 mile) This area of Hazelwood used to be a dumping ground for both lazy polluters and the city. The city declared it a greenway, protecting it from development and volunteers from PA Cleanways and the Student Conservation Association worked to rid the greenway of 10 tons of household trash, six tons of scrap metal, 100 bags of recyclables, and 72 tires. Working with the International Mountain Biking Association and the Hazelwood Initiative, they are developing a trail system of which this segment is the first official opening. It's a broad and easily navigable trail. At about the midway point you will find a space that is more open than the rest. This is where the bulk of the trash was hauled from. Imaging having to hand-carry an abandonded car from here back to Kingwood street. There's still at least two more back here if you want to help. It may be possible, with more work, to develop a mostly greenway trail system between Schenley and Frick parks.
