About This Trail
The site of the historic Hancock Pass is an excellent place for an SUV trip. This is a quote from a book that describes the train depot at Alpine Tunnel. It is a good idea to take a side trip to St. Elmo. Enjoy a more challenging trip to Hancock Lake. They allowed unlicensed vehicles in the parking area. There are two national forests in the area: San Isabel National Forest and Gunnison National Forest. It is possible to call the Salida Ranger District for current conditions. The rocky and slow-going is okay for aggressive stock SUVs. The plates are helpful. If the snow is on the trail, the drive shouldn't be attempted. "F It's This is an off-roading area. This route would likely get a hard rating if it were hiked.
