The shortest way to get to Gregory Bald is only one way and it's scenic and beautiful. The shortest hike is to the bald, but you'll have to drive out due to the one-way road. The hike to the bald and back will be described in this section of the hike. The hike begins with an easy climb. You will reach 1700 feet of elevation in the next three miles. The campsite is often used if it isn't closed due to bear activity. It's important to check in advance for reservations if you're going on a backpack trip. The original AT ran from here to Deals Gap before being moved to Fontana Dam. It will take a half-mile to get to the bald. You will have to leave so that you can return via the same route.
