About This Trail

Imported description
Dead Indian North is a pleasant hike along the east side of Dead Indian Creek as it makes its way North and down to meet the Clark's Fork River & Clark's Fork Canyon. As a matter of history, this trail is quite important. Chief Joseph and his Nez Perce chose this difficult route to avoid Col. Sturgis' trap waiting for them should they take the easier Dead Indian Pass. He confused the Army by doubling back with his people down along this difficult and steep route, thereby gaining two days travel advantage on the pursuers. Along the route, you can see a nice 15' falls early into the hike to the west. When you break out of the trees and are treated to a wide swath of tall grass, you can head a short distance off trail down the slope to see a great view of the canyon. Heading further along the trail you immediately turn east and head into forest again for a 1/4 mile or so. Once you break out a second time, there are multiple spur trails to the north that head out for fantastic views of Clark's Fork Canyon, including a clearly visible Lower Sunlight Falls (the falls with rainbow in pictures) and a partial view of Lower Dead Indian Falls. If you continue on the trail, you will find further opportunities/spur trails to see ever interesting views. Eventually you will reach a steep descent with switchbacks heading down to Dead Indian Gulch and the Clark's Fork River.
