Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve

Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve encompasses approximately 200 acres along the Congaree River opposite of Congaree National Park. Ranging in elevation from around 90 feet in elevation along the river, to over 250 feet in the higher sections. Along the trail you will begin in a longleaf pine forest undergoing restoration. Managed by fire, this portion is scrubby and contains sandy soils. In the middle portions of the trail, your hike will take you into a steephead ravine, dominated by deciduous plants, ferns, and moss. After ascending out of the ravine, be sure to check out the wooden deck overlook, as it contains some wonderful views of Congaree National Park and swamps below. A portion of this marked route descends into the floodplain along the Congaree. This area is a little less maintained, and contains significant amounts of poison ivy, but the views of the river and the swamp make it worth it. The descent to the river is over 100 feet in elevation, so be prepared for a nice hike back up.
