About This Trail
The highest point in the park is the Cerro Grande Route. The preferred route is marked by yellow diamonds and is 2.3 miles each way. The elevation gain from the trail to the summit is 1200 feet. It is an excellent place to see wildflowers in the late summer. The upper portion of the route has a great view of the lower Bandelier. As this trail begins at high elevation and ends at higher elevation, there may be snow and ice present for a longer time than at lower altitudes. In late summer, storms can pose a serious threat. It's important to be prepared with adequate gear and clothing. Hiking poles are good for hiking on steep terrain. There is no water on this route.
