Union Reservoir Cross-County Ski

The Spicer Road Sno-Park is a popular pullout along Hwy 4 just west of Bear Valley (and Lake Alpine). The area is shared by cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, snowshoers, and sledders. There is a network of snowmobile and cross-country ski trails from several access points in Bear Valley, and free maps may be available in the area. Some of the trails are groomed, and some are skier only - please heed all signs. This access point is a groomed snowmobile and ski trail leading to Spicer Reservoir (9 miles), Union Reservoir (10 miles), and Utica Reservoir (11 miles). This trail eventually connects up to the network of trails near Lake Alpine and a one-way ski tour would be possible. We used cross-country skis for this trip and due to the long miles, only visited one of the 3 reservoirs. This is a pleasant tour through forests with occasional views and a reward (the reservoir) at the end. Although the trail is shared with snowmobiles, the snowmobile traffic seems to be light, especially compared to nearby Lake Alpine. No section of the trail is particularly difficult, but the long mileage makes for a difficult trip and a full day.
