The Beehive Hildale Quad

The Canaan Mountain area offers some of the best slickrock outside of Zion National Park. The trail is met with a wide wash, marked with several small desert tanks. Looking across this wide wash the trail can be seen rising up on the other side. Dropping into the wash between the ridge and the face, you get your first glimpse of the true slant; just possible it is Class 3.  Walking up to where the slick rock meets the sandy ridge it is a definite Class 3.  Lovely shelf systems, solid cracks, beautiful. From the pine tree to the summit area, the scramble reverts back to Class 2+. Scramble the two largest hoodoos, east and west.  A large stone sits on the eastern hoodoo.  The hoodoo is a nice scramble in and of itself, with a corkscrew ledge system to arrive at the peak.   Use caution in the down climb, but again, solid Class 3 which means no need for any kind of hand line.  Plenty of bushes and small trees would allow the use of a rope if you feel the need, but if you are comfortable on steep slick rock, this face is a beauty. Hiking back up the Canaan Mountain Trail isn't as difficult and at the trail cairn you turn back toward Squirrel Canyon.
