Picacho Canyon Loop Trail

The Canyon Loop Trail is one of the trails at Picacho Peak inside of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument. From the trailhead (32.32631, -106.89155) walk down 0.2 miles until you will reach the intersection with the trail that goes to the peak, but you do not go there, so here turn to your right and take the trail that goes near the arroyo. On the next mile you can walk by the arroyo or on the trail, you will enjoy the sandy way and the beautiful rocks of the canyon. The trail is well marked and also has several post signs indicating the direction. At about a mile this trail turns to your left and continues by the side of the mountain for about another mile. In this section, you will enjoy a beautiful vista of the Picacho Mountain to your left, the Robledo Mountain in front of you and the beautiful Organ Mountains to your right. At about the mile 2, you will arrive to an intersection with another trail that goes to the peak, turn to your right and continue on the side of the mountain for about 0.2 of a mile, then turn to your left (you will see a post sign here) and walk down until you reach the Box Canyon, then turn to your left again. Box Canyon goes around the mountain, and most of the time you will walk by the sandy road, which is a very nice experience. Stop for a moment and enjoy this beautiful area, you will love it. At about the mile 3 do not walk by the Box Canyon trail, continue walking to your left by the arroyo around the mountain, you will see a post sign there. Then you will arrive to the same intersection you arrived at the beginning of the walk, turn to you right and walk up until the point you started. Following the post signs, this trail is near the 5 miles long, be prepared to enjoy a stunning landscape view with arroyos, rocks, beautiful flowers and desert plants, and do not be afraid of the cows, they are very peaceful.
