About This Trail

Imported description
The remnant of a volcanic explosion crater is called Kilboume's Hole. The crater is located in a desert basin between the Potrillo Mountains to the west and the Rio Grande River to the east. Kilborne's Hole is roughly a mile across and hundreds of feet deep and is elliptical in shape. The edge of the crater contains older basaltic lava, which was intruded by the volcanic explosion with ash deposits more than 100 feet high. There are no classic volcanic features such as a cinder cone or dome in Kilbourne's Hole. It is a pit or depression caused by a volcanic explosion.
