About This Trail

Imported description
This is a quite short loop around a pond formed by damming a stream that runs through an area which was an iron mine (Canada Mine) during the 19th century. There is almost no altitude gain/loss, although be aware that the footing can sometimes be a bit tricky along the way. The pond is the home of beavers as well as ducks and geese. Be aware that the area adjacent to the parking area is a major picnicking area, so can get rather crowded in the summer. Note that there are quite a few extant mining features, particularly in the areas between the pond and Rte 301, as well as just south of the pond, but it can be quite dangerous to go exploring. Park in the parking lot on the east side of NY Route 301. Ascend the steps and turn right onto the Pelton Pond Loop Trail (yellow) at the stone picnic pavilion. You parallel the west side of the pond (with beaver lodges soon visible) until, at 0.3 miles, you turn left to cross the dam which forms the pond. You then turn left to parallel the east side of the pond. At 0.8 miles, turn left onto an old mining road, soon passing a stone building with restrooms, then make your way back to the shelter and down the steps to your starting point.
