Permit required

Apply through the issuing agency. Many systems run seasonal lotteries or fixed application windows — confirm current dates on the agency page.

Climbing permits are required year-round for anyone going above 4,800 ft on Mount St. Helens. From April through October permits come from recreation.gov; from November through March they are free and self-issued at the trailhead. Each climber carries photo ID matching the permit, and groups are limited to 12 people per permit. Check the permit page for current quotas, fees and release dates.
