Iron Mountain to Old FR84 loop

Park on layby on Whitetop Rd where it is signposted Iron Mt/FR84. Start on Iron Mt trail for about 2 miles and follow the spur to emerge on FR84. Turn left and follow the road until you come to an intersection. Take a right to a gate where the trailhead is marked Jerry's Creek #765. Take this trail. It starts steep and narrow before finally reaching the creek and widening out to a FR type trail winding along the mountain side.Eventually the trail terminates on a FR road and houses can be seen to the left on the road. Turn right up the track and shortly after the bend there is a trailhead marked Rowlands Creek trail. This states that it is 4.1 miles to Old FR84. The trail starts flat, before climbing up steeply in some sections with several easy stream crossings. Parts can be muddy as it is also a well used horse trail. The final climb up to the intersection with Old FR84 is a relentless pull. At the top there is a gate, turn right. Just before the road continues straight, turn right to follow the orange blazed Old FR84. This is a v long series of switchbacks hugging the mountainside. Eventually the loop is completed. Turn left to rejoin the main FR84 and then immediately right to follow the FR back to the main entrance at Whitetop Rd and Skulls Gap. Turn left to join Whitetop. Follow the main road uphill until the loop is finally completed back at the Iron Mt signpost.
