Fool Creek Peak

Hiked to the top of Fool's Creek Peak from the Oak City Canyon Road via Walker Canyon. From the main road it is roughly about 4 miles to the peak. From the trailhead located up in Walker Canyon it is about 3 miles. You can drive up to the trailhead but the road is deeply rutted in many parts and has rocks. During the spring you will also likely need to drive through a stream bed which can get about a foot deep or more when water is at its peak. From the main road it takes about 4 hours (4 miles) to get to the peak especially since the last mile or so is steep and can be a killer on the lungs for some at 9600 feet. During the summer there is no water so bring plenty. (3 liters to be comfortable depending on your needs.) It would also be a good idea to bring a walking stick or trekking poles especially as the first mile on downhill trek from the peak can hurt those knees. The trail along most of the way isn't always marked well and there can be some overgrowth along it. However, occasionally some have been kind enough to tie orange flags in trees and bushes to make it a bit clearer. But don't count on them so make sure to bring a good topography map in addition to your compass and gps especially if it's your first time and you're not really familiar with the area. I'd plan on a good 7-8 hours to get to the peak and back from the main road. It can go a lot faster for some who are trail runners but at a reasonable pace and taking time to take some photos and rest up top it can take about that to make the trip safely. There is no cell reception except for a bit of reception you get at the peak where texting seems to work ok for those on networks such as Verizon or ATT. Note that some of the photos marked on the map may not show in the correct locations. Most of them should be of or from the peak.
