About This Trail
The trail leads to a sandstone outcrop overlooking the Wise Plateau. Hike goes through a variety of forest types, including a densely-forested cove near the Powell River. The Flag Rock overlook has 180 degree views of southwest Virginia and the Kentucky border. The trail is strenuous due to steep grades on the climb from Legion Park to Flag Rock, but the first half-mile is an easy walk for families. The ecology of the riparian ecosystems in the Appalachian Mountains is explained in this section of trail.
