About This Trail
The Alpine loop is comprised of the trail and engineer pass. The western half of the trip is full of historic points. You can take a side trip up Wager Gulch. One of the best places in the area for wildflowers is American Basin. There is a large staging area for unlicensed vehicles after the pavement ends. If it were to start from Lake City, it would be 30. The San Juan Mountains Center is closed in the winter. The western half of the trail is steep and rocky. The side trip up Wager Gulch is more difficult than it was. All roads are suitable for stock 4x4 SUVs with moderate ground clearance. The side trip up American Basin is very difficult.
