Trail reopened October 2017 to a new observation area; summit pinnacles permanently restricted. Trail itself is open; only the final rock scramble is permanently closed. The 'permanently closed' label is mis-applied to the full trail. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimney_Tops Quote: the extreme heat of the fires resulted in accelerated weathering and potential mass wasting of the exposed rock, and therefore access to the summit is no longer permitted for safety reasons.
