About This Trail

The Bizz Johnson Rail Trail is the longest rail trail in California. It is not busy because it is so far away. The BLM and the Lassen Land Trust organize shuttle services on Saturdays. It is a deal at only $3 per person with bike to get a ride to the high elevation end, which is almost the trail head. You can find information at www.lassenland andtrailstrust.or or www.blm.gov/ca/eaglelake. It can go fast as most of it is downhill. You don't have to have a light in the tunnel to see it, even though you can't see the ground. There are a number of bridges.

The Fernley and Lassen was a rail line of the Southern Pacific Railroad constructed in 1912–14 between Fernley, Nevada and Westwood, California, near Susanville, a distance of approximately 112 miles (180 km). The railroad was constructed to connect the Red River Lumber Company's facilities in Westwood with the Southern Pacific's main line running through Fernley. After the railroad's construction, it was heavily used by other nearby lumber companies; the Fruit Growers Supply Company maintained the longest-lived railroad connection with the Fernley & Lassen, with an active connection present between 1920 and 1953.
