About

Puu O Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site is the largest heiau, or temple site, on the island of Oahu. Located on a ridge overlooking Waimea Valley and the north shore, this historic site features impressive stone-walled enclosures that reflect its significance in Hawaiian culture. The name "Puu O Mahuka" translates to "hill of the escape," which may refer to its elevated position and its historical role in the spiritual practices of ancient Hawaiians. Visitors to Puu O Mahuka Heiau often come to explore the site’s rich cultural heritage and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The area is accessible via a short hike, and there is some parking available nearby. As the weather can vary, it is advisable to bring water and be prepared for changing conditions. Due to its location, the site is generally remote, making it a peaceful spot for reflection and appreciation of Hawaiian history. Before visiting, confirm hours, fees, and any closures on the official state site.
