About

Diamond Head State Monument is a prominent volcanic crater located on the island of Oahu, just east of Waikiki. Its name comes from the 19th-century misinterpretation of calcite crystals found in the area, which early explorers mistook for diamonds. The distinctive shape of the crater, formed over 300,000 years ago, is characterized by its steep ridges and lush vegetation. The site is not only a geological wonder but also a place rich in military history, having served as a coastal defense site during World War II. Visitors to Diamond Head can hike the historic trail that leads to the summit, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Honolulu, and the surrounding landscape. The trail is approximately 1.6 miles round trip and includes steep sections and a tunnel. Parking is available at the base of the crater, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Weather can vary, so it's advisable to bring water and wear appropriate footwear. As conditions and regulations may change, confirm hours, fees, and closures on the official state site before visiting.
