About

Iao Valley State Monument is situated in a verdant valley within the West Maui Mountains. The name "Iao" comes from the Hawaiian word for "cloud." The monument is notable for the Iao Needle, a prominent rock spire that rises sharply from the valley floor, flanked by steep cliffs and dense vegetation. This area holds historical and cultural significance for the Hawaiian people and features a botanical garden that displays plants introduced by early Hawaiians. The park includes a paved walking path that leads to a viewpoint of the Iao Needle, making it accessible to many visitors. It provides a tranquil setting for walking, photography, and observing the region's unique flora. Parking is available, but it is advisable to arrive early, as space may be limited. The weather can be humid and rainy, so visitors should dress appropriately and bring water. Conditions and access may change, so it is best to confirm hours, fees, and closures with the managing state agency before your visit.
