About This Trail

A real structure to see, not just a pile of mine tailings, is the fun trail to standing mill structure. The Sunflower Mine is a phrase. The National Mine produced mercury. The processing building still stands and you can find a large pipe used to tumble cinnabar. The fine particles were burned in coke to make mercury gas. The gas was cooled in U-shaped tubes. It is located in the Tonto National Forest. For current conditions, call Mesa Ranger District. The rating was difficult. Stock SUVs can reach the mine. The trail begins later. It becomes rocky and narrow with brush in some places. It was slippery when wet.
