About This Trail

Spitler Woods State Natural Area is a 200 acres site. Zion is home to one of the largest areas of old growth woods in central Illinois. The Spitler Woods Nature Preserve is dedicated to the site and provides additional protection for its valuable natural features. Red oak, sugar maple, black walnut and basswood are found in the mesic upland forest. There is a forest of white oak, red oak and shagbark hickory on the higher altitudes. There is a forest of trees along the creek in the nature preserve. The site has a great display of spring flowers. Birders can find yellow-billed cockney, gray catbird, eastern wood pewee and red-bellied woodpecker in Spitler Woods.
