Soapstone Trail

The Soapstone Trail is considered as an Out and Back trail. You have two options regarding parking. You can park at the upper end of the trail on S. Rolling Rd. then hike down. You can also park at the bottom trailhead in the Glen Artney area (Upper Lot) of the Patapsco Valley State Park. During winter freezing you may need to use the parking lot before you get to the pond. The tunnel road is sometimes icy. You would simply need to hike up the park road to access the trail. The trail is all up or down pending your direction. There are many small feeder stream crossings and the area can get muddy or icy pending the time of year. At the lower end of the trail is a very large stream crossing but it is manageable with rocks you can step on. The restroom at the lower trailhead in the park is closed during the winter months. You have the option of looping this area via the Star Struck Alt., Inner Soapstone, Bull Run or the Overgrown. Many of the alternate trails are generally high in terrain and dryer.
