About This Trail

A day-use park along a secluded strip of Lake Michigan shoreline is called Saugatuck Dunes State Park. The picnic parking area is a 0.7 mile hike from the Lake Michigan beach. The park has fresh water coastal dunes that are over 200 feet tall. The park's terrain is a mixture of steep slopes and rolling hills. The park is not very developed. The Augustinian Order acquired the land for Saugatuck Dunes in 1971 and used it as a seminary. The structures were used as a prison and police offices when the state took ownership. The main attractions of the park are the sandy beaches and the natural area, which contains a coastal dune system. Nature enthusiasts are the majority of day users.
