About This Trail
The High Hills of Santee were named for the high, sandy ridges in the Sandhills region. The remains of an ancient ocean shoreline can be found in the Carolinas and Georgia. The beach sand and shells were transformed into rock, called coquina, over time. The Civilian Conservation Corps used native stone to build structures in the park. The highest point in Poinsett is 130 feet high. The mosquitoes are less annoying than in the swamp. The passage begins in Poinsett and goes through the pines and hardwoods in Manchester State Forest. The red-cockaded woodpecker is an example of bird watching.
