About This Trail

Imported description
Odell Lake is one of the blue giants of the Deschutes National Forest. Like its neighbor, Crescent Lake, Odell is popular for its large Mackinaw (lake trout) population. In fact it holds the state record of 40 pounds 8 ounces caught in 1984. A healthy Kokanee population is the main food source for mackinaw and although not heavily targeted by anglers rainbow trout can grow to over 20 inches. Catching mackinaw traditionally requires boats with depth finders and down riggers. However early in the spring stripping large leach patterns in the shallows can be productive. Later in the season the fish move to deeper waters 80 to 160 feet. Trolling at these depths with quick fish and downriggers is the way to go. Kokanee dont grow as large as they do at Crescent Lake but the daily limit is 25 per day so quantity does entice Kokanee anglers to troll and jig for them. In spring they can be found 10 to 30 feet deep but as the water temperature rises they will drop as low as 100 feet. Rainbow trout can also be caught by trolling but fly fishing the edges of the lake with dry and wet can produce some pretty impressive fish up to 20 inches. Be aware there is a small population of bull trout found here but are protected and must be released unharmed. Two resort and several campgrounds service Odell Lake. Odell Lake Resort is located on the southeast corner and Shelter Cover resort is located on the northwest side. Both are open year round and offer guide service, restaurants, marinas and cabin rentals. The lake is open for fishing late April to October 31st.
