Oakland Nature Preserve - Stan Harris Trail

Green Earth offers hiking and outdoor recreation at six sites across Carbondale, IL. All properties are open to the public during daylight hours. This property is the second preserve acquired by Green Earth. It is located on North Oakland Avenue, near the Oakland Cemetery. The parking area is north of Owens and south of Ready Mix Road, on the east side of Oakland. This 20 acre preserve contains two trails, both at a low level of difficulty. A recent second trailhead was installed at the dead end of N. Bridge St. The Stan Harris Trail (named after one of the founding Green Earth board members and the driving force behind the small prairie) is located south of the railroad tracks that bisect this property. This trail loop is approximately .6 mile in length and winds through woodland and prairie habitats. Parking on Oakland Street will give access also to the second trail at this preserve, the Woodland trail, as well as the Kids Exploration & Education Trail and the Rothrock Prairie.
