About This Trail
The ravine forest trail leads to thickets of rhododendron and large-leaved magnolia trees. The lowest point of the trail is Turtlehead Rock, which is made of sandstone outcroppings. A large surface area of exposed rock is encountered in the upper reaches of the trail after a brief climb. Balds are considered to be unique in mountain terrain. There are many interesting and unusual plants and animals in this area. Among them are lizards and lichens. Hikers moving up the backslope of the Pine Mountain can see the tilted rock that points at the mountain's crest. The Living Stairway Trail is a trail that leads hikers back to the main park road.
