Fourth Lake Millennium Trail

The Millennium Trail stretches through the preserve and connects to the existing trail at Bonner Farm and McDonald Woods. The fen and Fourth Lake are home to a number of state threatened and extinction plant species and could provide a home for the American bittern. Fens are rare wetlands where mineral rich alkaline water comes to the surface. Fens have higher levels of vitamins and minerals and are a more diverse community. Fens are usually covered by grasses, reeds and wildflowers. The fen is located near two ridges of the Valparaiso Moraine. The fen drain goes south into Fourth Lake and then goes eastward into Mill Creek.
