About This Trail

The parking area on Longbottom Road is where the Doughton loop begins. You will cross the road and start on the trail. You will follow the Cedar Ridge Trail for 4.3 miles as it ascends to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Mountains to Sea Trail is also known as the Bluff Mountain Trail. You will stay on this trail for 7 miles and enjoy the views. You can head down the mountain on the Flat Rock Ridge Trail for 5 miles once you arrive at the Basin Cove Overlook. You will have completed the loop at the end of Flat Rock Ridge Trail. It is a strenuous trail, but it is enjoyable if you want to push the limits. There is a primitive campsite 1.7 miles from the start of the loop. The Blue Ridge parkway has a campground, but it is only open during the spring and fall.
