About This Trail

The hiking trail goes around Clear Lake along the scenic McKenzie Highway. The "lake born of fire" is the origin of the McKenzie River and was formed 3000 years ago when lava from Sand Mountain reached the river. The original forest was submerged. Some of the submerged trees are visible from the trail and boat. The lake is too cold for swimming. The lake is home to eagles and cutthroat trout. The lake has non-native rainbow and brook trout. Clear Lake is popular for many things. No motor is allowed on the lake. The Clear Lake loop trail is open to both hikers and mountain bikers.
