Candlewood Hill Trail

This a short loop which ascends to one of the nicest viewpoints in Fahnestock. To avoid these issues, park at the northern end of the paved part of Bell Hollow Road. Then head north on the unpaved road (passing old foundations along the way), turning right onto Sunk Mine Road at 0.6 miles. At 0.8 miles, there is a short spur which leads to a so-so viewpoint, after which you return to Sunk Mine Rd. At 1.2 miles, turn (off the road) onto Candlewood Hill Trail (red) and begin the ascent of the hill, with a few sections a bit of a scramble. You reach the top at 1.4 miles, where there are several viewpoints. To the north, you can see Sperling Pond, and, more impressively, to the southwest, you can see the Indian Point power plant on the Hudson River and what is probably Oscawana Lake. Descend the south & west side of the hill (again with a few scrambly spots), making sure to make a right turn at 1.9 miles, to return to your car. [If you're in a hurry, you can of course do an "out-and-back" hike by taking the trail up the southwest side of Candlewood and returning the same way.]
