Brown Tract Pond to Shallow Lake

Park near the shore of the upper pond (the smaller of the two). There is ample parking for at least 8 cars or more. The trailhead is clearly marked, and you will start off by going along the shore of the upper pond and then cross a bridge over a beaver meadow that will take you to the lower pond path. Follow this path for about a mile and you will see a sign for the Shallow Lake trail on the left. The trail will wind its way through heavy woods with lots of rocks and tree roots to trip you up if not careful. You will see some magnificent boulders just a few feet into the trail. About half way through the trail you will have to cross a foot bridge over another beaver meadow, and if you're not careful you will get wet. After the foot bridge the ground is quite tricky in spots. Take care to not take a misstep on what looks like solid ground. You can sink up to your knees in a peat bog that acts like quicksand. The trip to the lake is worth all the potential hazards, but be on the alert for black bears as there are warnings up all over.
