About This Trail
The traditional Native American culture and living history of Acoma Pueblo can be found in New Mexico. It's one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in North America. The mesa has about 300 two and three story adobe buildings, with exterior ladders used to access the upper levels where residents live. The road that leads to the mesa was blasted in the 1950s. Approximately 30 people live permanently on the mesa, with the population increasing on the weekends as family members come to visit and tourists visit for the day. Acoma Pueblo has no running water, electricity or sewage disposal. A reservation is 600-square-miles. The contemporary Acoma culture is relatively closed, but tribal members live on the reservation. According to the 2000 United States census, 4,989 people identify as Acoma.
