What is dispersed camping?

Dispersed camping is primitive camping on public land outside of developed campgrounds. There are no facilities — no toilets (usually), no water, no trash service, no marked sites. You may camp anywhere within the area, usually for free, subject to the agency's rules below. Pack everything out, follow Leave No Trace, and check current conditions with the land manager before you go.

From I-40, drive 26 miles south on NM Highway 117 to Cebolla Canyon Road, then approximately 5 miles to parking area. Park alongside the road and carry your camping gear to your chosen site — no motorized vehicles past the wilderness boundary.

Facilities

  • Potable water: No water in wilderness; drinking water available at El Malpais Ranger Station 20 miles away (open Friday-Sunday 8:30am-4:30pm).

Designated Wilderness within the El Malpais National Conservation Area, managed by the BLM Rio Puerco Field Office. Per the agency page: "Dispersed camping is allowed, BUT you must park your vehicle alongside the road and carry your camping gear to your chosen site" and "Firewood collection or bringing wood from outside the Wilderness is prohibited." Motorized vehicle use prohibited within wilderness boundary. Vault toilets at nearby Narrows Picnic Area (8.5 mi). State-wide BLM NM rule: 14 days within any 28 consecutive days, then relocate at least 25 miles.
