About
The largest tract of public land in Tennessee, Cherokee National Forest encompasses over 655,000 acres flanking both sides of Great Smoky Mountains National Park along the Tennessee-North Carolina border. The forest stretches from the Virginia state line near Bristol southward to Georgia, protecting Southern Appalachian hardwood forest, ancient spruce-fir stands, and some of the most biodiverse temperate ecosystems on Earth. Over 700 miles of trails include a significant section of the Appalachian Trail, and seven major whitewater rivers provide world-class paddling.\n\nThe Ocoee River gained international fame as the venue for the 1996 Olympic whitewater slalom events. Roan Mountain hosts the world's largest natural rhododendron garden, where 600 acres of Catawba rhododendron bloom each June. The forest's high-elevation balds provide panoramic views across wave after wave of blue-green ridges.\n\nCherokee's ecological significance extends beyond recreation, protecting critical habitat for over 60 rare and endangered species. The forest's extensive cold mountain streams support native brook trout populations and major restoration efforts. With proximity to Knoxville and Chattanooga, Cherokee serves as an essential outdoor recreation resource for millions.
