What is dispersed camping?

Dispersed camping is primitive camping on public land outside of developed campgrounds. There are no facilities — no toilets (usually), no water, no trash service, no marked sites. You may camp anywhere within the area, usually for free, subject to the agency's rules below. Pack everything out, follow Leave No Trace, and check current conditions with the land manager before you go.

170,200-acre high-desert wilderness offering primitive backcountry camping. No facilities; pack everything in and out.

Fire restrictions change daily. We don't publish a static fire-allowed claim — check the current order before any campfire, stove, or smoking.

You are responsible for compliance. Camping on tribal, private, military, or closed lands is prohibited and is your responsibility to avoid.

About

Per the BLM Burns District page: Steens Mountain Wilderness is one of the wildest and most remote areas in Oregon, encompassing more than 170,200 acres. Mechanized travel is prohibited inside the wilderness; primitive backcountry camping is the use pattern. The published lat/lng is a representative anchor, not a single trailhead. Pair this row with the BLM developed campgrounds on the loop (Page Springs, South Steens, Jackman Park, Fish Lake) for users who want a serviced base.
