What is dispersed camping?

Dispersed camping is primitive camping on public land outside of developed campgrounds. There are no facilities — no toilets (usually), no water, no trash service, no marked sites. You may camp anywhere within the area, usually for free, subject to the agency's rules below. Pack everything out, follow Leave No Trace, and check current conditions with the land manager before you go.

The Alvord Desert is a six-mile-wide, eleven-mile-long high-desert salt-flat playa east of Steens Mountain. Per the BLM Burns District page, dispersed camping is allowed; the only public facility on the playa is a single vault restroom at Frog Springs. No potable water, no cell service, no designated sites. High-clearance recommended; the playa is impassable when wet.
