What is dispersed camping?

Dispersed camping is primitive camping on public land outside of developed campgrounds. There are no facilities — no toilets (usually), no water, no trash service, no marked sites. You may camp anywhere within the area, usually for free, subject to the agency's rules below. Pack everything out, follow Leave No Trace, and check current conditions with the land manager before you go.

About

Designated Wilderness within the El Malpais National Conservation Area, managed by the BLM Rio Puerco Field Office. Per the agency page: backcountry permit required from the El Malpais Information Center in Grants or the BLM El Malpais Ranger Station on State Road 117 before overnight use. No restrooms or potable water in the wilderness; no motorized vehicles past the boundary. State-wide BLM NM rule: dispersed camping is generally allowed for no more than 14 days within any 28 consecutive days, after which you must relocate at least 25 miles away. Bring everything; self-rescue mindset required.
