Yellowstone Lake is the largest high-elevation lake in North America at 2,357 m (7,733 ft), with a maximum depth of 117 m (390 ft) per the National Park Service. It sits entirely within Yellowstone National Park and is the heart of the park's native Yellowstone cutthroat trout fishery — though invasive lake trout populations continue to suppress the cutthroat. NPS regulations require that any lake trout caught be killed (not released) and that all native cutthroat be released unharmed. NPS strongly discourages swimming due to cold water (averaging 4–10 °C / 41–66 °F) and thermal-area shoreline closures. A Yellowstone NP fishing permit is required in addition to any state license; permits are sold at park visitor centers and online at recreation.gov.
