Shumunkanuc Road Trail to Watchaug Pond

Very short out and back hike with scenic views and brook crossings. Though short, this little hike is a great "get-in-touch-with nature" break from a busy day. It features several small brook crossings, wear your gortex shoes/boots. It is doubtful that they may be there mid-summer, though. Birds abound and there is evidence along the trail of skunks, raccoons and deer. The trail passes through hardwood and pine woodlands. The flora is beautiful. The trail is unmarked and appears to be relatively abandoned. Beyond the fork in the trail, a yellow marked trail joins and crosses the one your on. After the short joining, at the next trail intersection, leave the yellow trail and continue straight on an old dried up stream bed. Look off the trail to find old granite stone cutting sites among the piles of boulders and small ledges. Bring your bathing suit, the trail ends on the shore of Watchaug Pond. There is a small sandy area there to welcome swimmers. There is also a stone fire ring if you'd like to cook out. Very tranquil.
