Palmetto Trail, Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway and Nat Greene Trail

Please note this trail may be hard to follow. This route is a combination of three named trails: Palmetto Trail, Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway and Nat Greene Trail. You CANNOT bike the whole loop, but only on the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway portion. Parking is scarce (about 5-6 spaces) and easy to miss, but right before the Nat Greene Trail sign on Old Battleground Rd. If you pass the old “railway” looking bridge, you’ve gone too far. Walk through that old railroad looking bridge and start your adventure at the Palmetto Trail sign passing that bridge (you will technically walk a little bit on the Bicentennial Greenway which is a totally different Greenway that continues away from this loop, so be carful and please look a the marked signs! You can also choose to do the loop in reverse starting at the Nat Greene Trail posted sign and going back to your car. It is not recommended to do this hike after a lot of rain as there is often debris covering the trail. On the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway portion, you will actually have Lake Brandt on both sides, as that used to be an old railroad track going from Wilmington to Mt. Airy, NC! And it is and amazing portion to walk or bike on! The actual A&Y Greenway is much longer as it starts about where the Office Depot is in Battleground Ave. and it goes all the way up a little bit further from the stop light where Lake Brandt ends Be careful not to walk on the Private Property right by this loop on the Palmetto Trail portion. So, you may want to download the map the first time you go out there, but it is clearly marked with signs.
