About This Trail
The Bear Spring Cabin is managed by the PATC. The shelter is open to hikers on the trail. The War Correspondents Memorial Arch is located at the Gathland State Park. The memorial is said to be the only one in the world that remembers journalists who died in battle. The grounds of the park were originally the estate of George Townsend. The South Mountain Battle was one of the first battles in the Maryland Campaign during the Civil War.
