George Lake

Begin the hike at the parking location at the intersection of Morrell Clearwater Road and Rice Ridge Road. The best way to do the first section of this trail is on bike, otherwise the beginning will be a road hike for roughly 3 miles. Once you get to the actual trail (which can be overgrown at times) there are places to hide you bike or lock it up among all of the Huckleberry bushes. The initial ascent is pretty steep, you will climb a couple thousand feet in a hurry so make sure your boots are tight. Once you make it to the top of the trail; which is just below Sunday Mountain peak, you will go through a saddle with a gorgeous view of Grizzly Basin. Continue along the trail and make your way through the upcoming small canyons and rock face traverses. Around 5.5 miles, be careful and watch your footing. This are is a rock slide scramble. There is a fairly visible trail the whole way but the gradient terrain can get tricky. Once you have passed the scramble it is all almost all down hill from there. You have a small incline up through some lightly wooded areas that are awesome for seeing deer and wildlife at the right time of year, followed by a canyon descent essentially the remainder of the hike until you come to the spillway of George Lake. Camping along the lake is pretty easy, just find one of the many plentiful spots and set up.
